Experience the the best-of-the-best Filipino chefs with a “Food Truck Challenge” at the first ever Manila Food and Wine Festival this Feb. 22 at the grounds of SM Mall of Asia complex, Pasay City.

Guactruck will be there as part of Chef Marvin Agustin’s Blue Truck team. Please support the Blue Truck by purchasing Chef Marvin’s Japanese-American sushi creations here: http://t.co/hRR0sp8m or by scanning the qr code.

All proceeds from the MFWF 2013 will be forwarded to a scholarship fund that will help 500 poor but deserving students earn a degree in culinary education. Your support will help fulfill the dreams of fellow Filipinos.

The food truck craze has officially hit Manila, Philippines by way of the Guactruck, a modern mobile eatery full of sustainable initiatives. The truck itself is a used delivery truck that has been outfitted locally with LED and energy-saving lighting.

Too bad this Filipino-Mexican food truck can’t swing its way elsewhere in the world for a peek at the truck and a chance to taste the delicious-looking food.

The design for the packaging is a creative solution to the wastefulness that most containers are today with it’s single cardboard, origami-inspired design. It’s made of biodegradable paperboard that is easy to recycle. Customers are encouraged to bring their used packaging back and will receive a free meal once they’ve returned 10. The packaging will then be sent for recycling. All of the cutlery used is made from cornstarch and biodegrades within 90 days.

If this is the work of a bonafide Filipino, then this is actually the first flippin’ time I’ve been over-the-roof proud of what this country has to offer. :D

March Madness: Surprises, Life, and Travels

Hmm this month was off to an amazing start. When we were just conceptualizing Guactruck, we had a list of websites we wanted to be featured in. We didn’t think it would happen but three of those on our list just did this month. On top of that, the response of people on tumblr was just a pleasant surprise. We actually had no idea that Guactruck was getting some attention on tumblr until we opened our emails and saw lots of messages in our inbox. Running a mobile eatery, especially in Manila where people are not used to the concept, is not as easy as it looks. So we’re really excited that people think our whole concept is clever and that you guys appreciate our work. Life really is funny. One day, we’re serving food inside the truck not sure if what we’re doing is right and the next, we’re getting featured on design websites we admire.

We’ve actually been operating for nearly three months this year (53 days to be exact, and 94 days in total since we started), which is roughly one quarter. And we think it’s time for a break (again) so we’re going on vacation. Meanwhile, Mr. Guactruck will be getting his much needed rest especially since the weather has been harsh on him. Watch out for a new look for Mr Guactruck. And we may post some pictures of our travels. Lastly, we’d like to leave you with this quote:

Food trucks are no longer reserved for construction workers and street fairs. With this rabbit-like growth, many food trucks have sprung up that move away from grungy and greasy in hopes to gain an advantage. With this high level of competition, the visual appeal of the truck itself can give a business that extra edge.

The GuacTruck mobile eatery is ahead of the game, combining modern truck exterior with a fresh and interesting menu. The dark wood exterior panels are coupled with a sizable display window that tastefully shows off the trucks ingredients, creating the feeling of being inside of a restaurant while still standing on the street.

The owners behind the business understand that the food truck experience has evolved into more than just grabbing a quick bite. “Waiting and ordering from a food truck has become a social experience, a scene. Not only is it a way to satiate hunger and cravings; more importantly, it’s become a cool way to socialize and meet people.”

While this particular truck might be difficult to spot (currently located in Philippines), I bet we’ll see more and more easy on the eye food trucks in 2012.

Went to Guactruck for my birthday bite with Audrey, Erica and Mikee. They have really good stuff! Perfect for a snack to go. You can find this cute truck in the carpark by Toastbox in The Fort, near HSBC.

Somehow, we think Guactruck is jinxed. In the past month alone, he’s been into three accidents. Most recent one is breaking his window. Seems that being blessed by Tibetan monks does not suffice. Bathing in holy water would probably be in order. So I guess Guactruck will be having his very first church visit soon. As for the missing window, we’re thinking of replacing it with a chalk board. Cheers! ^.^

Last week was eventful. Driver went missing, generator got busted, forgot keys so entered truck through the window, supplies ran out, and gear shift fell off while in the middle of the road. Despite everything, we are quite happy with the turnout at Net Quad/HSBC. We definitely had fun meeting all of you. See you guys again next week! ^_-
